Introduction To Pharmacopoeia
Pharmacological = Pharmakon ( means drug ) + Poesia ( to make )
• Pharmacopoeia is a government official book that describes the standard of drugs, tests of identification, efficacy& potency to be maintained strictly. It contains a collection of monographs published by authorised bodies like the government or pharmaceutical society.
• Monograph is a collection of detailed information on a particular drug, chemical name, assay, formula, solubility, identification, PH , and dose.
Importance of Pharmacopoeia
• To maintain uniformity & control the standards of drugs available in the market.
• To avoid alteration in drugs
• To provide complete information on drugs.
• Reference for laboratory, industry and academic instruction.
Indian Pharmacopoeia
• Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission ( IPC ) set standards for drug manufacturing, sold, and consumption in India.
• In pre-independence days, British Pharmacopoeia (BP) was used in India.
• In 1946, the government of India published the pharmacopoeia list containing a list of drugs which was of substantial medicinal values & thus justification to India on official pharmacologic.
• In 1948, the Indian Pharmacopoeia committee for publishing Indian Pharmacopoeia under the chairman of Dr B.N. Ghosh
1st edition = 1955 ( supplement 1960 )
2nd edition = 1966 ( supplement 1975 )
3rd edition = 1985 - 2 Volume
4th edition = 1996 - 2 Volume
5th edition = 2007 - 3 Volume
6th edition = 2010 - 3 Volume
7th edition = 2014 - 4 Volume
8th edition = 2018 - 4 Volume
