       Mupirocin Ointment I.P. 2% w/w                               Musaf 5g

COMPOSITION:

  Mupirocin IP..........................................2%w/w
  In the water-soluble base...................q.s

DESCRIPTION:

Mupirocin ointment is indicated for the topical treatment of the following primary and secondary skin infection due to susceptible pathogen: primary pyoderma such as impetigo, folliculitis, furunculosis, ecthyma; secondarily infected dermatoses such as eczema, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, herpes, epidermolysis bullosa, and infected traumatic lesions such as ulcers, minor burns, cuts, wounds, surgical incisions, and insect bites.

Prophylactically, mupirocin ointment may be used to prevent bacterial contamination in minor burns, biopsy sites, incisions, and other clean lesions. For abrasions, minor cuts and wounds the prophylactic use of mupirocin may prevent the development of infection and permit wound healing.

MECHANISM OF ACTION:

Mupirocin is a novel antibiotic produced through fermentation of Pseudomonas Fluorescens. Mupirocin inhibits isoleucyl transfer-RNA synthetase, thereby arresting bacterial protein synthesis.
Due to this particular mode of action and unique chemical structure, Mupirocin does not show any cross-resistance with other clinically available antibiotics. Mupirocin shows little risk of selection of resistant bacteria if used as prescribed.
Mupirocin has bacteriostatic properties at minimum inhibitory concentrations and bactericidal properties at the higher concentration reached when applied locally.

PHARMACOKINETICS:

Mupirocin is poorly absorbed through intact human skin. However, if it is absorbed or it is given systemically, it is metabolized to the microbiologically inactive metabolite monic acid and rapidly excreted which is excreted mainly by the kidney(90%).

ADVERSE EFFECTS:

Burning, pain, stinging, itching, abnormal redness, dry skin, inflammation of the skin,  nausea, oozing, skin rash, swelling, tenderness.

WARNING/PRECAUTION:

The Mupirocin ointment formulation is not suitable for ophthalmic use, intranasal use, use in conjunction with cannulae, at the site of central venous of cannulation.
Avoid contact with eyes. If contaminated, the eyes should be thoroughly irrigated with water until the ointment residues have been removed.
Mupirocin should not be given to patients with a history of hypersensitivity to any of its constituents.

DOSAGE:

Apply a small amount to surface 3 times per day, reevaluate in 3-5days.

STORAGE:

Between 15-25 degrees Celsius. Protect from light. Do not Freeze
