Zinc:

 Zinc

Zinc is a mineral that the body uses to fight infections and build cells. It is essential for wound healing and the creation of DNA, the genetic blueprint, in every cell. If you don't get enough zinc in your diet, you may experience side effects such as hair loss, inattention, and a deterioration in taste and smell. Zinc deficiency is rare in the United States, but it does occur in some people.

Symptoms:

Zinc is used by the body for cell production and immune function. There is still a lot to be learned about zinc, but we know that zinc is essential for growth, sexual development and reproduction. Without zinc, your body cannot make new healthy cells. This causes the following symptoms:

1. Frequent colds in the head

Zinc deficiency is associated with a weakened immune system. People prone to colds or infections can be a sign of zinc deficiency. There is also evidence that zinc can shorten the duration of a cold if you take it within 24 hours of the onset of cold symptoms.

2. Problem in vision

Blurred vision can result from zinc deficiency. The eyes contain a high concentration of zinc, and zinc deficiency can cause vision problems. In severe cases, zinc deficiency can cause retinal changes.

3. Unexplained weight loss

Zinc deficiency can cause changes in appetite, so unexplained weight loss could be a sign of zinc deficiency. Mood changes, irritability, or depression may also occur.

4. Hair loss

Unexplained hair loss is a common symptom of zinc deficiency. However, too much zinc can be just as harmful as too little zinc. People should focus on getting enough zinc from dietary sources before trying nutritional supplements.

5. Wound healing delay

Zinc also supports healthy skin and good blood clotting. Irreparable inflammation can be another sign of zinc deficiency. In fact, zinc supplements are often prescribed to treat stubborn wounds. Zinc is also used to treat acne and is one of the most studied acne treatments.

6. Diarrhea

Zinc deficiency can make people more susceptible to diarrhea. A study of malnourished children in India, Africa, South America and Southeast Asia showed that zinc supplementation can shorten the course of infections that cause diarrhea.

7. Loss of appetite

An unexplained decrease in odor and taste can be a sign of zinc deficiency. This is because one of the enzymes needed to get the right taste and smell depends on zinc.

8. Slow growth in children

Zinc supplements are often prescribed for pregnant women because zinc promotes proper growth and development. Conversely, children with zinc deficiency may not grow or develop as they should. Stunted growth in children may indicate zinc deficiency.

9. Frequent brain fog

Zinc plays an important role in regulating neural communication, according to a study by the University of Toronto. Zinc deficiency can cause blurred thinking and memory problems. Because zinc is so important for cognitive function, zinc supplementation has been shown to help improve symptoms of ADHD (Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).

10. Lowers blood sugar

Researchers have found a link between zinc and diabetes prevention. Zinc naturally regulates blood sugar levels and supports insulin production. Zinc deficiency can lead to low insulin levels regardless of your weight or other medical conditions. Research shows that zinc has the greatest benefits for preventing diabetes, but there is growing evidence that it may benefit people who already have diabetes.
